Letter from Matt Hall, Speaker of the House

I want to share an important update about the future of our elections here in Michigan.

Recently, the push to impose ranked choice voting failed, and that outcome matters. Michigan voters made it clear they do not want a complicated and confusing election system forced on them. Our elections should be simple, transparent, and easy to understand so every voter can have confidence that their voice counts.

From the start, I said ranked choice voting was the wrong fit for Michigan. It adds layers of complexity that would make elections harder to administer and harder for voters to navigate. That concern was echoed by local election clerks from both parties who are responsible for running elections fairly and accurately. When the people closest to the process raise red flags, we should listen.

House Republicans took action by passing legislation to ban ranked choice voting and clearly protect Michigan’s election laws. That step ensures our state stays with a system voters know, trust, and understand. It also keeps election administration consistent across communities and prevents unnecessary confusion on Election Day.

Now the responsibility shifts to the Senate to listen to the people of Michigan and move this legislation forward. Voters have spoken, and they want elections that are straightforward, secure, and reliable.

As we approach Christmas, I also want to take a moment to wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas. This season is a time to reflect, to be grateful, and to spend time with the people who matter most. I am thankful for the opportunity to serve and for the continued engagement of citizens across our state.

I will keep working to protect the integrity of our elections and to represent Michigan families with clarity, fairness, and respect.
