Oversight, transparency, accountability...
Letter from Matt Hall, Speaker of the House
(Click here to see the original version of Matt Hall’s letter.)
Every day, I hear from Michiganders who are tired of wasteful spending, tired of poor service, and tired of not getting straight answers from their own government. They are right to expect better. That is why we are taking action to tighten oversight, demand transparency, and make our state government work the way it should.
First, we are ending state-sponsored EV subsidies. These deals were sold as big wins, but taxpayers ended up footing the bill while the benefits never lived up to the promises. Instead of pouring millions into handpicked projects, we are putting that money back toward real priorities that help families every single day. That is the responsible way forward.
We are also bringing transparency to the Attorney General’s office. People deserve to know what their government is doing. They deserve clear information, honest reporting, and accountability. For too long, the AG’s office has operated without the transparency Michigan expects, and the result has been political lawfare. We are changing that with real oversight and new standards that put the public first.
At the same time, we are holding the Secretary of State accountable. I hear from families across Michigan who are frustrated with the glitchy websites, hidden information, inconsistent service, and a lack of answers. That is unacceptable. We are demanding more oversight of IT projects, accurate reporting, and service that respects people’s time. Michiganders deserve nothing less.
And we are cracking down on fraud and abuse in Bridge Cards. These benefits are meant for families who truly need help, and we cannot allow misuse to take resources away from them. Our plan strengthens verification and enforcement to protect the integrity of the program and make sure every taxpayer dollar is used as intended.
All of this comes back to a simple principle: taxpayers deserve honesty, transparency, and accountability from their state government. I am committed to making sure Michigan delivers on that promise.
Thank you for the opportunity to serve. I will keep fighting every day to make your government work for you.
